ROANOKE, Va. - William "Bill" Henry Yost, Jr., 88, of Roanoke, went home peacefully to be with his Lord on Monday, May 30, 2016 from his residence in Roanoke County. He was born November 13, 1927 in Bluefield, West VA, a son of the late William and Hattie Yost, Sr. He was a member of Westhampton Christian Church, Roanoke.
Bill is survived by his children, Rebecca A. Welling and her husband Jim of Massillon, Ohio, William H. Yost, III and his wife MaryKate of Dayton, Ohio and Kelly D. Hamilton and her husband Munger of Roanoke, Virginia; two grandsons, James G. Welling, II (Missy) of Massillon, Ohio and Zachary S. Yost of Dayton, Ohio; two step-grandsons, James I. and Clint E. Hamilton, Roanoke, VA; two great grandsons, Alexander S. and Andrew J. Welling of Massillon, Ohio; three step-great grandsons, Tristan and Koby D. Siglock of Massillon, Ohio, Jace I. Hamilton of Roanoke, Virginia and one great granddaughter, Gracey Brown-Yost of Dayton, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Betty in 2006. Bill served as a Sergeant in the Signal Corps during World War II. He was a graduate of Bluefield College and Virginia Tech in mechanical engineering.
He was employed by Norfolk & Western Railway (N&W) for 46 years, retiring as Chief Engineer, Eastern Region. He moved over 20 times with N&W living in Bluefield, W. VA, Bluefield, Crewe, Lynchburg, Roanoke, VA., Conneaut, North Olmstead, Portsmouth, Wheelersburg and Massillon, OH, and St. Louis, MO. He had a great love for railroading. He lived railroading, outside of his family. He had the passion - not many people do in any kind of work.
Bill was a member of both the Masonic Lodge and the Elks Lodge in Roanoke, VA and a past member of the Kazim Temple in Roanoke, VA. Bill made friends everywhere he lived. He had a passion for golfing. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Good Samaritan Hospice and Generation Solutions for their care and support to Bill. They were wonderful to our family.
Bill's family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Oakey's South Chapel, 4247 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke. The funeral service will be in the Chapel Mausoleum of Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2016, following visitation with the Reverend Dr. Jim Crockett will officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to, Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24018, or to Westhampton Christian Church, 2515 Grandin Road SW, Roanoke, VA 24015 in Bill's honor.
