Virginia E. Burress
Her work on earth is done. Virginia E. Burress, age 91, died Monday, March 23, 2020 at her beloved home in Pounding Mill, VA near "her" mountains as she called them. She was a worker! In the 50's and 60's she sold Avon door to door while being a homemaker, raising her children, milking cows, churning butter, growing a garden, harvesting and canning her yield. In 1963 she went to work at Eastern Isles, a sewing factory in Richlands, VA and toiled for 20 plus years while working alongside the love of her life James, on the family farm.
Born in 1929, the first of 11 children, expectations of early family assistance was common during the great depression. Helping her mother, Virgie and father, James Doak Beavers with the home and farm chores. Leaving elementary education after the 3rd grade, she never stopped learning. She obtained her GED and become a certified nursing assistant, starting another career of being a caregiver well into her 80's.
Her favorite pastimes were flower gardening, quilting and cooking. Her flower gardens are meticulously planned for blooms of every season and her quilts have won many ribbons at the County Fair.
Her children, Joy and Jimmy, were always loved and provided for, but her grandchildren were her total heart. Scott, Christy and Jordan always knew that MaMaw had their back and was sometimes their partner in crime. They never went hungry or lacked any need. Later her face and heart were totally radiating with arrival of her great-grandchildren, Brynleigh and Kasen, children of Jordan; Jett and Revv, children of Scott and his wife, Kristi.
Those gone before her include her loving husband, her parents, six brothers, Cecil, Glen, George, Walter, Jimmy and Charles (Buck); sisters, Frances Brown and Betty Patterson, all of her fourteen brothers and sisters in law of the Burress family.
Surviving are two brothers, Robert Beavers and wife, Joyce and Roger Beavers; two sisters in law, Lucille and Ruth Beavers; brother in law, Eugene Patterson; last surviving Aunt of 101 years of age, Sarilda Linkous, to carry on her memory in their hearts.
With her in her final moments of life, always loving and supporting her, were her daughter Joy and son in law, James Mulkey.
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, a private entombment will be at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, VA. A celebration of Life gathering of family and friends is planned later in the summer.
