Bramwell, WV - Susan Lance Troutner, 80, of Bramwell, WV, went to be with her Heavenly Father on January 20, 2026.
She was born August 3, 1945, in Catlettsburg, KY, to Curtis Lance and Vangie Perdue Lance. The family lived in Maybeury before moving to Bramwell in 1954.
Susan graduated from Bramwell High School in 1963. She attended West
Virginia Institute of Technology before marrying Tommy Thompson, from
Montcalm, in 1965. Their beloved daughter, Susan Emmeline "Emme"
Thompson, was born in 1975.
Susan earned her bachelor's degree from Bluefield State University in 1986 and a Master of Education from Ohio University in 1994. Susan devoted her career to education, serving as a teacher, school principal, and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction.
In 1997, she married Howard Troutner, beginning a fulfilling 29-year marriage and a professional partnership focused on improving their Ohio school district.
In 2017, Susan and Howard returned to Bramwell. Though she retired from
administration, Susan returned to teaching, serving as a resource teacher and closing principal at Anawalt before teaching sixth-grade math at Mount View High School, where she remained dedicated to her students until her sudden passing.
In addition to her husband, Howard, and daughter, Emme, both of Bramwell, Susan is survived by her sister Frances Lance Sparks (Fred); brother Whitfield Lance (Sue); nieces Tammy Galligher (Joe), Beth Haynes (Mark), Susan Gaither (Matt), and Leigh Underwood (Mike); nine great-nieces and nephews; numerous cousins; three Troutner sons and daughters-in-law; ten Troutner grandchildren plus five spouses and three great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Kermit Lance; sister Irene Lance; and half-sisters Ann Elaine Hill and Dorothy Jo Casey (Bob).
Public services were held January 30 in a beautiful celebration of Susan's life. The Troutner grandsons and Susan's
nephews and great-nephews served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
