PRINCETON — Roger (Herman) Lafferty, Sr., 87, of Princeton, died Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Serenity Place in Lerona. Born August 31, 1926 at Herndon, he was the son of the late Benjamin Lloyd Lafferty and Vinnie Angle Lafferty. Mr. Lafferty was a veteran of the US Navy serving in World War II. He moved to Mercer County from McDowell County in 1976. He was of the Baptist faith and was a deacon in the Independent Church of God for 23 years. He was a member of U.M.W.A. Along with his wife, they were in the gospel music ministry for more than 30 years. They ministered at many local churches, revivals, several radio stations and at numerous funerals. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Sara Tilley, Lorene Buckhannon; and Flossie Hatcher; and three brothers, John H. Lafferty, Avery Lafferty and “Cowboy” Lafferty. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Gath-Lee Virginia Gwinn Lafferty; five children, Darlene Lusk and her husband Melvin of Cool Ridge, Roger H. Lafferty, Jr. and his wife Katie of Beaver, Michael Lafferty and his wife Joyce of Bluefield, Philip Lafferty and his wife Karla of Conover, NC and Carrie Bailey and her husband Darrell of Bluefield; two sisters, Betty Blevins of Midway and Phyllis McNeely of Beckley; one brother, Leroy Lafferty of Georgia; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2014 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with his son, Bishop Roger H. Lafferty, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where military honors will be conducted by the Mercer Veterans Honor Guard. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Jason Lafferty, Chris Lafferty, Steven Lafferty, Justin Lafferty, Brandon Bailey and Josh Bailey. The family will receive friends Friday, August 29, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
