FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. - Mr. Robert B. "Bob" Allen, age 84, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Friday morning, May 1, 2015 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville. Born in McComas, WV, he was the youngest and last living of seven children born to the late Archer and Alvirdie Elizabeth Mills Allen. Mr. Allen grew up in the coal mining hills of West Virginia. During his Junior High School years he met Ella Sue Sizemore, who lived across the mountain from Bob. Until becoming old enough to drive, he would walk across the mountain to court his future wife. In 1949, Mr. Allen graduated from McComas High School. After high school, he worked in the coal mines for a short time before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1950. In 1951, he and his high school sweetheart wed. Upon being discharged in 1954, he enrolled at Concord College and later attended Marshall University where he majored in Biology and minored in Health Science. After graduating college, he taught Biology and coached at Matoaka High School. In 1962, Mr. Allen moved his wife and their two children to Maryland just outside Washington, D.C. He continued teaching as a Physical Education Teacher at Walden Woods Elementary School and James Madison Middle School in Clinton, MD until retiring in 1983. During his teaching years, he coached for several local high schools, Boys & Girls Club and American Legion Basketball and Baseball teams, leading his teams and the area's athletes to many victories and titles. While at Walden Woods, Mr. Allen produced an annual tumbling show which was always standing room only over several evenings to accommodate all those who wanted to attend. He was well-loved by his students and he touched many lives in a positive way. During the late 1960s and until the mid-1970's, Mr. Allen owned Esso / Exxon gas stations in Southeast Washington, DC. In 1989, Mr. and Mrs. Allen made their new home on Amelia Island, Florida. He was an avid horse race fan and especially enjoyed the activities of the Derby and Downs. He continued to be avid sports fans and followed Marshall Football. He loved working crossword puzzles with his grandson Casey each morning. He also enjoyed dancing in his younger years and even won a jitterbug contest with his late wife. Mr. Allen's wife passed away in 2013. Their son, Robert B. Allen had passed away in 2006. He leaves behind their daughter, Karen Dotson and her husband, Jerry, Fernandina Beach, FL; two grandchildren, Anthony Allen, Boca Raton, FL, Casey Dotson, Fernandina Beach, FL; a great-granddaughter, Jaylene Allen; brother-in-law Richard M. Mosrie, Jr. and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 8, 2015 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard Funeral Home with his nephew, Ronald Dunford, officiating. Mr. Allen will be laid to rest with his wife at Jacksonville National Cemetery. His family will receive friends on Thursday from 5:00 -7:00 pm at the funeral home.
