Richard Arthur Roesch, 76, died at home with his devoted wife Paula by his side on March 24, 2023, following a long illness. Richard, born in Aberdeen, SD November 25, 1946, never met a stranger. His easy smile, full-bodied laugh, and open heart made an impression on everyone he encountered. Richard loved people, travel, music, and his numerous collections. He found joy in almost every aspect of life and brought joy to the people he was with. He graduated Bluefield State College in 1974 with a degree in nursing and worked for decades as a Registered Nurse in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia, as well as eight years working as a travel nurse in several eastern states.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Jake Roesch and Muriel Sumption Roesch and his older brother J.J. Roesch, all originally from Aberdeen, SD. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Paula Roesch of Radford, VA, his daughters Tabitha Townley of Rocky Gap, VA and Melanie Hannah of Marion, VA, his grandchildren, Jacob Kidd of Rural Retreat, VA and Elayna Townley Steffey of Bastian, VA, a beautiful new great-granddaughter, Anna Lee Grace Steffey of Bastian, VA, his sister, Marilyn Glaser of Stockton, CA, his nieces Mara Glaser of Stockton, CA, Sara Glaser of Los Angeles, CA, Sara Cottle of Washington DC, and Jennifer Cottle of Reston, VA, nephew Seth Cottle of Reston, VA, in-laws Lyle and Debbie Cottle of Spanishburg, WV, and two wonderful women who were always in his heart, Margaret Holman James of Aberdeen, SD and Sue Carpenter of Rural Retreat, VA. His dear friends, scattered across the country, are too numerous to be named.
In his typical mindset of helping others, Richard donated his body to the Virginia State Anatomical Program in the hope that he can assist in the understanding of the heart anomalies that led to his death. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held later this year.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a GoFundMe account to assist with final expenses.
