Rock - Richard Nicholson, 78, of Rock, died at his home on Saturday, April 11, 2026 surrounded by his family and friends. Born May 29, 1947, in Bluefield, he was the son of the late Clifton Nicholson and Windella Roberts Nicholson.
Mr. Nicholson was a former employee of the City of Matoaka Water and Sewer Treatment Plant. He served in the US Army in Vietnam, where he received the Bronze Star. He served in the 1st/150th West Virginia National Guard and retired after 27 years of service to his country. He received the Army Commendation Medal at Fort Lee for saving three children from a burning house trailer. In his spare time, he owned and restored classic cars. He loved spending time with his family and making people laugh.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, June Weese Nicholson; and one sister, Loretta Mae Nicholson.
Survivors include three children, Darrell Nicholson and wife Tammy "Gracie" of Beeson, Ginger Nicholson of Lashmeet and Christopher Nicholson of Rock; four siblings, Wayne Nicholson and wife Cathy of Surfside Beach, SC, Shirley Nicholson Green of Princeton, Della Marie Clark and husband Jack of Bluefield and Tina Cales and husband Greg of Athens; four grandchildren, Andrea, Leanna, Nichole and Sarah; and four great grandchildren, Skylar, Kameron, Oliver and Elliot.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with his special friend, Pastor Roy Williams, officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where military honors will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard.
Serving as pallbearers will be Darrell Nicholson, Christopher Nicholson, Greg Cales, Josh Hager, James McKinney and Melvin Rye.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 16, 2026, from noon until service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.bailey-kirk.com.
