Richard Aubrey Baugh, age 91 of Tazewell, VA, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2025 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, VA. Born May 4, 1934 in Bishop, VA, he was a son of the late Buford Aubrey Baugh and Ruth Holland Belchee Baugh. A career Electrical and Aerospace Engineer, he dedicated his life to his work. He received the BSEE degree from VMI in 1955 and the MSEE from Drexel Institute of Technology in 1962. He joined RCA in 1955 and contributed to various projects in capacities ranging from circuit design to system engineering and concept studies. His early work included studies to determine the reliability and task analysis for automatic checkout of surveillance satellites using on-board computers; the development of the optimum characteristics of a data processor to control automatic test equipment; and research in number theory, where he held a patent on an application of residue number theory to digital computers. He also devoted his later work to the application of digital computers to the control of radars ranging from radio telescopes to modern strategic and tactical phased array systems. Mr. Baugh was an engineering leader in system design, assigned to the Navy's AEGIS AN/SPY-1 radar program. While performing in this capacity, Mr. Baugh was named as the winner of the 1972 Division Technical Excellence Award for his outstanding leadership in the successful development and test of the AN/SPY-1 radar control system programs. In his retirement years, he dedicated himself to golf—both playing and watching it on television. He also had a keen interest in the stock market and he enjoyed traveling all over the world. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Baugh, and one sister, Mary Jane Stinson.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Priscilla Baugh; son, Steven C. Baugh; brother-in-law, Pat Stinson; nieces, Francesca Baugh and Mary Beth Stinson; nephew, Michael Baugh. He is also survived by special caregivers he considered family, Vicky Lott, Nancy Fields, and Amanda Rose.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, VA with Pat Stinson delivering the eulogy. The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until the service hour.

Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.

After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.

Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.
