Matthew Arnold Pennington
Late Monday evening, October 7, 2019, Matthew Arnold Pennington, 81, of Speedway, WV, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Born May 1, 1938 at Speedway, he was the youngest child of thirteen children to Perley A. and Ollie Myrtle Pennington.
A 1956 graduate of Athens High School and the Mercer County Technical Vocational School.
A man of deep integrity, compassion for the elderly, children the disabled and animals.
A precision machinist of 40 years, beginning his career with Elmore and Morgan Machine Shop in Bluefield, WV and continued it at the Old Virginian, Norfolk and Western, the Norfolk Southern Railroad's in Princeton where he retired in 1990. He was well known for his work.
A member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, but his passion was farming.
His knowledge of the land and animals provided his family with a comfortable living. He took pride in keeping the century farm clean and neat.
Arnold like to share his knowledge with the young farmers following his footsteps.
He had a home filled with joy, laughter but most of all love for all who entered.
A faithful member of Painter's Chapel United Methodist Church of Speedway, he served as a greeter for many years, with lots of hugs and warm handshakes.
He was fondly called the "sucker man" and passing out suckers to all the children as they left the church. Arnold and Ellen was also known as
MaMa and PaPa John Deere.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin grandsons, Luke and Levi Pennington, six sisters, Mary (Dawson) Hicks, Pansy (Ed) Marine, Pauline (Joe) Wood, Ruth (Herman) Renn, Helen (Eugene) Conner, Freda Pennington and five brothers, Roy (Wilda) Pennington, Carlyle (Orcal) Pennington, Carles (Juanita) Pennington, Laten Pennington and an infant brother.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Ellen Louise Shorts Pennington. Three loving and devoted children, Kimberly Catron and husband Gilbert; Keith Pennington and wife Donna; Karen Patton and husband Tony. One brother, Hubert Pennington and wife Carol of Lakeland, FL. Ten grandchildren, Matthew (Jessica) Catron, Sara (James) Hart, Michael (Kellie) Catron, Sonya (Randy) McPherson, Josiah (Nicole) Pennington, Bryan Pennington, Kayla (Mark) Parsons, Brittany (Robert) Blevins, Daniel (Kiersten) Pennington and Laura Bragg. Twenty-one great-grandchildren. Special nephew Freddie Conner and wife Anita. Several nieces, nephews, dear friends and his church family.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, October 12, 2019 from Painter's Chapel United Methodist Church with Pastor David Damewood and assisted by grandson Daniel Pennington officiating.
Burial will follow in the Bowles Cemetery at Speedway.
Friends may visit with the family from Friday, October 11, 2019 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the services at the church.
The family has requested in addition to flowers, if you wish to bring a non-perishable food item for the less fortunate, it will be collected at Painter's Chapel.

Grandsons will be serving as pallbearers and grandchildren will serve as flowerbearers.
The Pennington family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory and Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.

I remember him well when I was working at my Dad's gas station, he would stop by most every day; he was very friendly, loved being a farmer! He was the kind of person you never forget! Comfort & peace to his wife & children ! Phil. 1:3
