Lula Mae Grogan Sanders Obituary
Lashmeet - Lula Mae Grogan Sanders, age 93, of Lashmeet, WV, passed into life eternal on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, in Lerona, WV.
She was born on August 24, 1932, in Widemouth, WV, to Leonard McCoy Grogan and Julia Mae Miller Grogan.
Lula Mae graduated from Matoaka High School in 1952, where she had enjoyed playing girls' basketball and baseball with some of her closest classmates, which she kept in touch with throughout her adult life.
She worked as a seamstress out of her home from the mid-50s to the late 70s. She made custom-fitted dresses, formals, skirts, pants, and jackets for many ladies in and around the Mercer County area, as well as provided her sewing skills for several of the Matoaka High School cheerleaders during the 60s and 70s.
She was a long-time member of Rich Creek Baptist Church, located in Spanishburg, WV. She was a gifted cook for both her family and church gatherings, rarely relying on recipes, and her dishes were always delicious.
In her later years, she cared for terminally ill patients in their homes, which made a long-lasting impression on her.
Lula Mae is survived by her daughter, Emma Bennett; five grandchildren, Lisa Karnes (Bill), Michelle Buchanan (Jimmy), Amy Mills (Jeff), Christopher Bennett (Marcina), and Darren Sanders. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Dylan Sanders, Coleton Dixon, Brooke Bennett, Samuel Dixon, and Emilee Bennett, her youngest brother who has been so kind and helpful to her for many years, Paul Grogan, Sr.; and a special friend who has provided priceless assistance to her when it was needed most, Diane Syres.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Sanders; her brother, Samuel Grogan; sisters, Viola Pennington, Betty Sheets, Annie Lester, and Leona Thompson, and her two sons, Emmett Sanders and Elvin Sanders.
Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, with Pastor Jamie Maddox officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to: Rockin' Chair Residential Care, 2103 Pine Grove Rd, Lerona, WV 25971.
