Louise A. Harman Obituary
Wilcoe, WV - Louise A. Harman, 99, of Wilcoe, WV, peacefully entered eternal rest on February 11, 2026. She was born on June 26, 1926, in Elbert, West Virginia, to the late Thomas Warren and Mary Elizabeth (Penn) Abbington.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Mandle J. Harman; her parents; her sisters America May Abbington, Marie M. Demby, and Ernestine Hyland; and her son‑in‑law Bradley M. Jackson.
Louise graduated from Gary District High School in 1944 and later from the McDowell County Vocational School of Nursing in 1968. After high school, she joined her older sisters in Maryland, contributing to the nation's efforts during World War II by working in a defense plant. Her calling to nursing grew from time spent caring for her daughter during a hospital stay, inspiring a long and dedicated career. Louise served as a nurse at Steven's Clinic Hospital in Welch, WV, and later at the Tug River Health Clinic in Gary, WV.
Louise was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was a proud member of First Baptist Church of Wilcoe, WV, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She cherished instructing her children, traveling, listening to music, and visiting family. Her favorite journeys included attending Gary District Reunions and traveling to Canada, Hawaii, Mexico City, Paris, and London.
Louise lost her mother as a child; she deeply valued the acts of kindness extended to her by other women during her childhood and as a young adult. Those gestures left an impression and inspired her to become a source of support and friendship for the neighborhood children. Louise and her husband provided transportation for their children's friends to teenage events such as ball games and dances. The children's parents trusted that their children were safe and cared for in Louise's hands.
As the years went by, Louise's home became fondly referred to as the "candy house." Children in the community knew they could always count on her to offer snacks or food, reinforcing her reputation for kindness and hospitality. In addition to her nurturing spirit, Louise was also known as a "Kitchen Beautician," styling her daughters' hair and extending this service free of charge to two other girls in the neighborhood. Through these thoughtful acts, Louise fostered a warm and welcoming environment for all who entered her home.
Louise is survived by her daughters, Cheryl M. Jackson of Hillside, NJ, and Teresa D. Harman of Moorestown, NJ; her granddaughter, Ghia S. Jackson of East Orange, NJ; her sister, Lovella Sheffield of Huntington, WV; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.
A graveside service for Louise will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 20, 2026 in the Mausoleum at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Bluefield. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the Mausoleum by 11:00 AM on Friday. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.seaverfuneralservice.com.
