Leona Mae Cuccaro Abshire Obituary
Leona Mae Cuccaro Abshire of Princeton died Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Stonerise Healthcare in Glenwood.
Born in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Allen and Mattie Jane Hurt. She attended Mercer County Schools and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Princeton. Leona lived in Connecticut for many years, moving there from Baltimore, MD, where she met and married Anthony Cuccaro. For many years, they were the owners and operators of Meriden Transfer and Storage Company, Agent for United Transfer in Meriden, CT. They returned to West Virginia in the 1980's and Anthony passed away in 1984.
Leona worked at the Holiday Inn in Princeton and was also employed with the United States Chamber of Commerce. She married Dr. Paul L. Abshire and moved to Chicago, IL, where his medical practice was located. Upon retirement, they returned to West Virginia. Leona was adamant about the fact that her greatest accomplishment on this earth was her children. They gave her strength and purpose and filled her life with love and joy. In her words "God is so Good". The wonderful blessings of this life will be celebrated by those she loved dearly and remembered by those she touched with kindness and love.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Anthony Cuccaro; second husband, Dr. Paul Abshire; brothers, George, Robert, James, Wade, and Ben Hurt; sisters, Nora Stalling, Kate Spicer, Ferlene Thornton, and Alma Hurt.
Leona is survived by three sons, Allen Edward Cuccaro and wife Ulana of Wallingford, CT, Kenneth James Cuccaro and wife Megan of Meriden, CT, and William Joseph Cuccaro and wife Ruth of Peterstown, WV; niece who was no less than a daughter, Debra Ann Brock of Holden Beach, NC; stepdaughters, Sandra Longhi and husband Angelo of Chicago, IL, and Susan Rowe and husband William of Newnan, GA; grandchildren, Nicole, Shannon, Andrew, Dominique, Rocko, Sonny, and Olivia Cuccaro; great-granddaughter, Nashlyn Moore; and her many beloved friends and church family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Princeton with Father Sebastian Devasya as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour Wednesday at the church.
