Juanita "Edie" Estelle Hale Obituary
Juanita "Edie" Estelle Hale, 97 of Newhall, WV passed away Friday, September 24, 2021 at Princeton Community Hospital. She was born in Warfield, Kentucky on October 27, 1923 to the late Walter C. and Mabel F. Hale.
Juanita was a proud 1941 graduate of Big Creek High School. Upon graduating she attended business school in Bluefield, WV and worked for several years for the Consolidated Bus Lines in Bluefield and then moved on to the central office at the Mercer County Board of Education. While working at the BOE she attended classes at Concord College during nights and summers achieving her Bachelor of Science in Education. Subsequently, she started working as an elementary school teacher at Newhall Elementary in McDowell County. After teaching for several years and attending summer school at West Virginia University she achieved her Master of Arts degree thus becoming principal of Newhall, retiring in 1989 with 27 years of service.
Juanita was a 50 year plus member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary serving as president for many years, was a member of The War United Methodist Church where she served as secretary, a member of the McDowell County Retired Teachers Association where she served as treasurer, a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International-Phi Chapter and was a loving sister, aunt, neighbor and friend to many.
In addition to her parents, Edie was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Nathan C. and Mary Florence, Vernon C. and Pauline, John A. and JoAnne, sisters and brothers-in-law Mandeline and Steve Wolkovich and Frances "Frankie" and Robert L. Turner and an infant brother, Walter Jr. Also preceding her in death were nieces Amy McCarver, April Nieuwenhuis and nephew David Hale.
She is survived by nieces Deborah Yost and Karen Hawthorn, nephews Thomas Hale (who has helped so much) and John Robert Turner, who was her live-in caregiver the last 11 months and her special feline fur-baby, Trampus.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the Kindred Home Health Staff and Juanita's dear family friends Elishia and Hershel Pierce, Natasha Prater of McDowell County Commission On Aging, Cody and Missy Williams, and neighbors Peggy Brewster and Betty Tucker.
Services will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at 12:00 PM - Noon with visitation from 11:30 am until time of services at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, Virginia with Pastor Chris Vanover officiating; burial will follow in the cemetery. Friends may call during the 30 minutes prior with social distancing, masks and Covid-19 protocols in place.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, McDowell County Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
Fanning Funeral Home of Welch will be serving the family.
