South Boston, VA - John Martin Marra, age 82, of South Boston, VA, passed away on April 7, 2025.
He was born in Bluefield, WV, the son of the late John Henry and Alice Fortune Marra and grandson of the late Martin Marra and Katherine Richardson Marra and Henry Allison Fortune Sr. and Constance Fourqueran Fortune.
A graduate of Bluefield High School, he attended Bluefield State College, where he received his Bachelor's degree. He furthered his education by getting a Master's in Administration from Hollins College and his Masters in Education from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA.
John was a big fan of the Cavaliers Sports Teams but, number one, he was an ardent WVU Mountaineer's fan.
After short stints, in Tazewell County, VA and Leonardstown, MD, he settled in Halifax County, VA, where he taught for over 40 years.
John was a lifelong reader and never stopped learning. His simple explanation of complex things always impressed us. We also enjoyed his quick, clever and witty remarks.
We want to thank the late Johnny Mayo and Tom Rohrer for their kindness to John during his BSC days.
John is survived by his twin sister, Margaret Anne Marra of Bluefield, VA, and his brother, Al (Cathie) of Midland, MI.
He was preceded in death by his sister Patricia Wimmer of Bluefield, WV.
Per John's wishes, he was cremated and his remains will be interred at the family plot at Monte Vista Cemetery.
