John Alfred (Jack) Hall Obituary

On Sunday, October 8, 2023, John Alfred (Jack) Hall, 91, of Welch, WV and formerly of Toronto Ontario passed away peacefully in his home with family by his side. Born March 23, 1932, Jack was a loving son to the late Robert Walker and Mary Constance Hall of Toronto Ontario.

A devoted and loving husband, Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Butler. Jack and Louise had an unmatched passion for traveling and adventures; Jack often made mention that together they traveled around the world twice. Jack and Louise were soulmates with indescribable love and common interests. Whether on a tropical island, in a five-star hotel, or cozied up in their home in Welch, their affection and respect for each other was evident.

As Jack humbly made known to those close to him, he was grateful and thankful for his blessings from God. He would say, "Every day I thank the man upstairs." Jack was genuinely kind with an exceptional sense of humor, firm in his faith convictions but gentle with his opinions.

While residing in his native Toronto, Jack owned and operated the successful Hallmark Tile and Carpet Company. He was an accomplished contractor. Later, along with Louise, he became the proud owner of the Count Gilu Motel, Welch, WV...known to many as Welch's finest. Guests enjoyed Jack's wit and tales of travel to exotic places, and all who knew him were charmed by his Canadian accent and his warm, pleasant, positive demeanor.

Proud of his Scottish heritage and a true gentleman, Jack had many talents. He stayed active in his community, supported civic events and was beloved by his family and friends Like a Renaissance man, Jack delighted in painting, singing and dancing. His rendition of "The Gambler" will be a cherished treasure to those who heard him sing. In his younger days, he was a champion trick water skier, a curler, and an all-around sportsman. Jack's children and grandchildren have fond memories of great times and celebrations at the summer cottage he built, owned and named "Scotch on the Rocks" in Gravenhurst Ontario.

Jack's enthusiasm and ambition for a great game of golf with his best buddies Jim Hampton, Jim Sizemore, Lacy Wright and the late Jimmy Welch was unrivaled, but he may have relished the camaraderie more than the game. These golfers traveled near and far, played many different courses together and were often joined by the Canadian contingency.

More than his drive and success in business and his passion for travel and sports, Jack was a caring, loving father to sons Russ (Wendy) Hall, David (Debbie) Hall, daughter Rhonda Hall (Bill Couto) and predeceased daughter Donna. Cherished Grandfather of Greg, Brandy, Nicole, Jaclyn Adam, Kendra, Tyler and Andrew. Treasured Great Grandfather of Owen, Evan, Luke, Summer, Natalie, Maurice, Russel, Caroline, Benjamin, Dylan, Naomi and Zachary.

Other family left to cherish Jack's memory, brother Bill (late wife Elsie) Hall, brother-in-law Jimmy Hampton (late wife Emma), sister-in-law Mabel Bailey and brother-in-law Phil Bailey, Emma Lou Butler(late husband Sammy).
