Jack Leon Metcalfe, Jr. (Jay) passed away on July 1, 2010 after an aggressive battle with cancer. He was born on March 25, 1940 in Bluefield, W.Va. He was the son of the late Jack Leon Metcalfe and Eva Pasley Metcalfe. He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Winfree Metcalfe; his two daughters, Anne Kathryn Metcalfe and Sarah Cabell Metcalfe, both of San Francisco, Calif.; his son, Jack Leon Metcalfe, III; his sisters, Katherine Metcalfe Wheeler of Cambridge, Mass., and Elizabeth Metcalfe Abrams of Boulder, Colo.; and his nieces and nephews; and four grandchildren. Mr. Metcalfe served his country as a 2 Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Bay of Pigs campaign. In the late sixties he moved to the Roanoke Valley. Jay became a well known figure in the Roanoke community. Jay is remembered by his family as being loving, caring, kind, and sensitive. He loved life and people. There were no strangers in Mr. Metcalfe’s life; if he didn’t know you he made it a priority to meet you. Jay is remembered by his friends and colleagues as a great personality. He was a gracious southern gentleman. He could tell a story as big and easily as Mark Twain, and his laugh was contagious.
