WYTHEVILLE, Va. - Saturday April 16th Emelia Ann Hylton Smith Johns, Carrington Place Wytheville, VA, passed away peacefully. Born March 23, 1918 in Princeton, WV was the daughter of the late Raymond and Ethel MacLeod Hylton. She graduated from Princeton High School and then graduated from the University of Virginia with her degree as an RN in 1939.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers Raymond, Thomas and Carrington Lee Hylton. She was also preceded in death by her husbands Philip Smith and James Johns and a son Lawrence Smith.
She is survived by her daughters and their husbands Annette Falkevitz and Richard of Royersford, PA, Lynn Anderson and Tom of Richmond, VA, Lauren Grant and Jack of Arden, NC, Denise Romano and Vince of Bland, VA and Lisa Blankenship and Kyle of Union WV. Two step-sons James Johns, Jr. of Staten Island, NY and Shawn Johns of Huntington, WV. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She worked many years in different settings as an RN and taught LPN classes at the McDowell County Vocational school in the mid-1960's.
Mrs. Johns was very active in many social and civic organizations over the years in Welch and Bluefield, most notably the UDC of which she has been a member since 1971. She has served locally and in the state of WV as president, second vice president and historian. From 1982-1984 she served nationally as Vice-President General. She is now an Honorary President of General. It was very important to her to preserve old cemeteries and grave stones for the historical and genealogical information there.
She was been a member of the DAR for over 60 years. She was a member of the Col. Andrew Donnelly, John Chapman and Matthew French Chapters. Mrs. Johns served as Regent of the Matthew French Chapter.
Volunteer work was very important to her. She logged almost 5000 hours at Bluefield Sanatorium and Bluefield Regional Medical Center. She logged 1000 hours at the Naples Community Hospital in Naples, FL when she spent winters there with her husband Jim. She volunteered at Red Cross blood mobiles for many years.
She loved painting, reading, travel and spending time with family and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2016 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Steve Antes officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 p.m. until service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lions Club Eye Foundation or to any eye sight organization of choice.
