Gary - Edward James Redmond, Jr., 94, died March 19, 2022 in the McDowell County Continuous Care Center, Gary, West Virginia.
Ed was born July 10, 1927 in South Deerfield, Massachusetts. He was the son of the late Edward and Genevieve Redmond.
Ed attended Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA, graduating in June, 1946. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army from September 26, 1945 to March 6, 1947. After an honorable discharge, he attended Springfield College in Springfield, MA, lettering in football, basketball and baseball. He earned a degree in physical education. Ed's talents in baseball landed him a contract to play for the Boston Braves organization being placed in Welch, WV playing for the Welch Miners. While in Welch, he met his wife of 47 years, Louisa Mae Barley. After two seasons with the Miners, 1952 and 1953, he decided to begin his teaching and coaching career. Starting in 1953 at E. C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Virginia, he then moved to Perth, New York and taught and coached from 1954 to 1969. His last move was made to teach in Ithaca, NY from 1971-1988. Upon retirement, Ed and Louisa moved to Christiansburg, VA and became avid Virginia Tech fans. In 1990 he was inducted into the Perth Sports Hall of Fame.
Ed loved to play golf and bowl, pitch horseshoes, corn hole and he loved being with his friends having great fun.
Besides his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Louisa, brothers Bernard, Francis, sister Mae Turatti and a daughter, Patti Beckett, as well as sister in law, Christina Barley.
Ed is survived by his two sons, Jim (Debbie) Redmond of Welch, WV and Eddie (Amy) Redmond of Free Union, VA. Eight grandchildren Jimmy, Amy, Bethany, Todd, Kimberly, Michael, Vincent and Kelsey. Thirteen great-grandchildren, Natalie, Addison, Kynsleigh, Bryson, Nathan, Ramsey, Presley, Lily, Rylee, Alyssa, Gavin, Cameron and Rylee, as well as son in law, Jerry Beckett. Additionally survived by brother Richard Redmond of South Deerfield, MA and sister Jane Redmond of Westfield, MA.
Ed attended The Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Christiansburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 355 Independence Blvd. NW, Christiansburg, VA 24073.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church in Welch, WV Thursday, March 24, 2022. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM -11:00 AM with Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 AM by Celebrant, Father Binny with military honors by American Legion VFW Post 1144 of Iaeger, West Virginia.
Ed's wishes were to be cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Ceres, WV. Pallbearers will be family members.
