Bluefield, WV - Dr. Gary Ronald Lawson, 76, of Bluefield, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on May 28, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on May 13, 1950, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, Gary was the son of the late Glenn and Mildred Lawson.
He graduated from Bluefield High School in
1968 before pursuing his passion for dentistry. While at B.H.S., he was part
of the 1965 and 1967 State Championship football teams. Gary earned his
Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from West Virginia University School of
Dentistry in 1980.
Following graduation, Gary served as an Associate Professor at the WVU School of Dentistry sharing his knowledge and passion for dentistry with future generations of dental professionals. In 1981, he opened his dental practice, which proudly served the residents of Southern West Virginia for 40 years. He took tremendous pride in his work and was deeply respected by colleagues, patients, and friends alike for his dedication and compassionate care.
Gary embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. He was a devoted fan of WVU athletics and especially enjoyed cheering on the Mountaineers. He loved spending time in Myrtle Beach, fishing, reading, playing guitar, and perfecting his culinary talents. Homemade bread, pizza, and grilling THE BEST steaks were among his specialties. Gary especially treasured hosting family gatherings in "The Gap" and tailgates at Mountaineer field.
Known for his vibrant personality, warm heart, and unforgettable presence, Gary left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His generosity, sense of humor, and love for family and friends will be remembered always.
He is survived by his brother, Earl Lawson and his wife, Jan Lawson, of Bridgeport, West Virginia; his four children: Aaron Lawson and Holly Lawson of Speedwell, Virginia; Chad Lawson and his wife, Lyndsey Lawson, of Daniels, West Virginia; Sean Lawson and his wife, Ellyn Lawson, of Roanoke, Virginia; and Erica Taylor and her husband, George Taylor, of Greenville, North Carolina. In addition: his former wife, Cindy Lawson; his stepson, Brinley Conner and his wife, Angela Conner of Richmond, Virginia; as well as 10 grandchildren and many extended family members, dear friends, former colleagues, and patients who will miss him greatly.
Visitation will be held at Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield, West Virginia, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Gary's legacy of dedication, hospitality, friendship, and love for family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
