Donald Blair (Buddy) Moore, age 86, a resident of 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, the Croasdaile Village Retirement Home, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning at his home. A native of Bluefield, Va., he was the son of the late John Will and Ella Hall Moore. He was preceded in death by his two sisters and husbands, Mrs. Jacqueline Moore Shonting and George, and Mrs. Dorothy Moore Bratcher and Robert. He was preceded in death in Bluefield by grandparents, Ambrose Grayson and Josephine Hall; and his aunt, Mrs. Pearle Hall Hale. His grandfather served as Chief of Police for 20 in Bluefield, Va. His aunt was a charter member of First United Methodist Church of Bluefield, Va. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Wanda O'Shinski Moore; a nephew, Robert E. Bratcher Jr. and wife, Miriam, of Durham, N.C. and their son, Robert E. Bratcher III, of Durham, N.C.; a niece, Mrs. Jacqueline Bratcher Pierce of Cary, N.C. and her sons, Robert of Los Angeles, Calif., and Ryan of Cary, N.C.; a niece by marriage, Mary Ann O'Shinski Goodwin and husband, James, of Conyers, Ga., their son, Michael, and their daughters, Kathryn, Christine, and Mary, all of Conyers, Ga. Service to his country was an important part of Buddy's life. At age 17, in spite of strong objections of his mother, Buddy volunteered for the U.S. Army and served from 1943 to 1953. He was in active duty in World War II, was a Sergeant in the Korean War and in the Occupation of Japan. He served with the 91st Division, Company H 362nd Infantry Regiment on the Italian Front which fought from Rome to the Arno River, the North Apennines and the Po Valley. Buddy fought in six major campaigns, and was a paratrooper in the 187th Airborne. Buddy graduated from Bliss College in Columbus, Ohio, attended Bluefield College, Bluefield, Va. and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in mathematics from Bluefield State College. He and Wanda married in 1956 in the First United Methodist Church of Bluefield, and made their home in Columbus, where he was employed at a highway construction firm, Erdman, Anthony and Hosley. After six years, they returned to Bluefield, where he continued his career in highway construction as an office project manager and technical civil engineer until his retirement from the West Virginia Department of Highways. Buddy was a life long member of the Masonic Lodge Ancient Accepted Scottish Rites in the Valley of Columbus Ohio and Shriners Aladdin Temple AAONMS. Since 1986, he and Mrs. Moore have been residents of Durham. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday Aug. 3 in the Chapel Mausoleum of Grandview Memorial Gardens in Bluefield with the Rev. Bradley Scott officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, (North Carolina Hospitals) Defy the Odds Campaign, P.O. Box 31356 Tampa, FL 33631.
