PRINCETON — Dillard Fitzhugh Ables, 93, of Princeton died Friday, October 28, 2016, at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born April 28, 1923, in McComas he was the son of the late E.O. and Allie Webb Ables. He was a retired electrician for U.S. Steel where he worked at Gary Mines. He also retired from Mercer County Technical Education Center where he taught Industrial Electricity. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in the Battle of Northern Solomons and the Battle of Luzon. He was a highly decorated corporal, receiving the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, APTR with Bronze Arrowhead, and the World War II Victory Ribbon.

Dillard was a member of the United Mine Workers Association and of the Methodist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother killed during WWII, Bernard Ables; and four sisters, Cora Ables, Lucille Ables, Eva Ables, and Glenna Fowler.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruby Shrader Ables of Princeton; two sons, Glenn Ables and wife Diann, and Thomas "Tommy" Ables and wife Darlena, all of Logan; one daughter, Marcia Ables Mason and husband John of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren, Timothy Ables and wife Jane, Laura Ables Frye and husband Donnie, Glenn A. Ables, II, and Wyatt Ables and wife Katie; nine great-grandchildren, Brittany, Kaylee, Casey, Cami, Christian, Alex, Allyson, Shayne, and Sierra; two sisters, Amer Blankenship of Princeton, and Audrey Poole of Portsmouth, VA; and one brother, William "Mickey" Ables and wife Lula Belle of Princeton.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 31, 2016 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Reverend Larry Dyer officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The WV National Guard Honor Guard will conduct Military Graveside Rites.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour Monday.
