Debra "Debbie" Adkins Enigk, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away at age 71 on Monday, March 17th in Knoxville, Tennessee, her home for the last three years. Debbie was born on May 15th, 1953 in Bluefield, WV and grew up in Norfolk, WV. She graduated from Princeton High School in 1971 and from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (go Hokies) in 1975. She obtained a degree in Mining Engineering and was one of the first women in the United States to do so. She worked for Atlantic Richfield in Los Angeles, California, and then returned to West Virginia to work for US Steel. After that, she was the director of Economic and Community Development for the city of Princeton, WV, where she pioneered many projects for the city, including bringing a minor league baseball team franchise to the area. Debbie served as the president of Academic Boosters of Mercer County, which raised money for student scholarships. She also worked for many years at Mercer Health Right Free Clinic, which served uninsured patients.
Debbie was an avid reader who often read an entire book in one day. This was a remarkable accomplishment, given how much time she also loved to spend outdoors bird watching and gardening. She also often volunteered her time at schools reading to children. She loved art in all forms, and enjoyed creating it. While she loved all of these roles and activities, her favorite role was being "Gram Gram" to her beloved four year old grandson, Olliver.
Debbie is preceded in death by her mother, Carol Faye Price and her father, Charles Adkins. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Gerard Enigk, her children Rachel Enigk and Matthew Enigk, son-in-law Logan Wise, grandson Oliver Colin Wise, and sister Allison Adkins Marino as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library or to the Bluefield Union Mission of Bluefield, WV.
Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Enigk family and invites you to view and sign the online registry at www.gentrygriffey.com.
