It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bernice Opal Hill Phipps, who departed from this world surrounded by loved ones on Friday, March 7, 2025, at the age of 95.

Bernice was a cherished member of the community, whose warmth, generosity, and unwavering spirit touched the lives of many.

Born on September 8, 1929, in Boissevain, Virginia, where she remained, to the late Roby Kellis and Nannie Hill.

Bernice was a faithful member of Boissevain Pentecostal Holiness Church. Bernice developed a love for canning, especially her famous pickles, cooking, the best cornbread and biscuits ever, gardening and quilting, making all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each one made with love.

Throughout her life, Bernice was known for her deep religious belief, dedication to family, being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She faced life's challenges with faith, grace and courage, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and strength.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Mack Gratton Phipps, Children: Roby Phipps and Vera Sparks, Grandchildren: Kory Sparks, Fred Jr. Belcher. Brothers, Paris, Jack, RK, Andy and Willis Hill. Sisters, Vera Harless, Dorotha Thacker, and Nell Rose Hill.

Left to cherish her memories are son Glen Phipps (Tammy) of Abbs Valley, daughter Karen Crigger of Bluefield, VA, daughter-in-law Pat Phipps of Boissevain, brother Jimmie Hill sisters Joy Scyphers, Elaine Lawson and Gail Gravely, grandchildren Todd (Tammy) Phipps, Kyle Belcher, Kevin (Barbara) Sparks, Roby (Sirena) Phipps, Rhonda Woodall, Melissa (Justin) Gibson, great-grandchildren Mackenzie Sparks, Ryan Phipps, Brandon Phipps, Emily Phipps, Austin Belcher, Tyler Groseclose, Justin Woodard, Ashley Phipps, Patrick Phipps, Cole Sparks, Gavin Gibson, Brody Gibson, Ranessa Benfield, Robert Woodall, great-great-grandchildren Brinley Phipps, Branson Cheek, Lincoln Phipps, Aria Phipps, Rylee Woodard, Dorothy Groseclose, Journee Woodard, Madelyn Benfield, Camstyn Benfield, Raylyn Phipps and Brayson Phipps, special friends Mary Alice Mason and Becky Taylor.

Bernice's passing is a profound loss, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Boissevain Pentecostal Holiness Church, where family and friends will gather between 11am - 1pm with funeral services 1pm - 2pm. Rev Rayburn Woodyard and Pastor Charles Scruggs will officiate. Burial will follow at the Phipps Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers - Todd Phipps, Kyle Belcher, Kevin Sparks, Justin Gibson, Kelly Harless and Roby Phipps.
