Barkley Crabtree "B.C." Umberger Obituary

Barkley Crabtree "B.C." Umberger died October 3rd, 2013 at his home. He was born October 23rd, 1923 in Wythe County. B.C. graduated from Wytheville High School in 1941 when he started his trucking career. In 2011, he received the Golden Achievement Award from the American Truck Historical Society for being in the trucking business for over 50 years. He was a lifelong farmer. He was in the dairy business for over 50 years. In 1976 he began processing and selling milk produced from his own farm. In 1969, he built Tri-State Livestock Market. In 1970, he was cofounder of Wythe Raceway. He was owner of Sand Mountain Sand and Umberger Ready Mix Concrete. For 65 years his passion was buying cattle and shipping west to feed lots. He is preceded in death by his parents, T.O. Umberger and Nellie Crabtree and a brother, Owen Umberger. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Hayton Umberger, of Wytheville; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Samuel Boyer, of Rural Retreat, Amy and Larry Martin, of Wytheville; sons and daughters-in-law, Sammy and Jackie Umberger, Danny and Jane Umberger, all of Rural Retreat; sister, Aleen U. Niday, of Bland; brother and sister-in-law, Ned and Martha Umberger, of Wytheville; 17 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral service will be Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. in the Holy Advent Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Harvey Atkinson with the interment in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends at Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville Saturday from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
