William's Story

TANNERSVILLE, Va. William Elmer Osborne passed away with his loving family at his side on January 22, 2017. Mr. Osborne was a life life long resident of Tannersville, VA. He was born on Septemer 15, 1934 to Elmer and Jessie (Patrick) Osborne. In additon to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a brother Kelly Osborne and two sisters: Alice Ruth Osborne and Linda(Osborne) Palmer. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Della (Hypes) Osborne and two sons: William E. Osborne Jr. and wife Debbie of Tannersville and Dr. James A. Osborne and wife Irene of Millerstown, PA. He is also survived by a sister Nancy (Osborne) Frye; a brother Robert (Sharon) Osborne both of Tannersville and a sister-in-law Sandra (Clear) Osborne of Saltville.
Bill loved to spend time with his six grandchildren: Allison Lawson (Randy); Alana Osborne (Christopher Musick); John David Martin (Hailey); Alice Claudine Harden (Seth); Katie Osborne and Sarah Osborne. In recent years his days included 9 great-grandchildren:  Ryleigh and Reed Lawson; Gracie Musick; Hunter and Tyler Martin; William, Andrew, Matthew and Elizabeth Harden.
A graduate of Rich Valley High School, Bill served as the Tazewell County Sheriff for 24 years. He was past master of the Rich Valley Masonic Lodge #172, past president of the Tazewell Rotary Club and Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star- Saltville #151. He was a member of the O'Keeffe Royal Arch Chapter #26 Scottish Rite, Tazewell-Russell Shrine Club. He was vice-president of the board of the Tannersville Volunteer Fire Department and chairman of the board of the Little Valley Christian Church.
He was an active member of the Republican Party of Virginia, serving as a delegate to 9th District Convention and a Delegate to the State Convention. Bill was the Past Sergeant of Arms of the Virginia State Sheriff's Association, was appointed to the Virginia Tobacco Imdentificaiton Committee, and The Virginia State Board of Corrections.
His love of agriculture was shown in the pride he took in the family farm. Bill operated a 130 head dairy farm until 2001 when the farm became a beef cow/calf operation. His passion for Virginia agriculture was shown in his involvement with the Virginia Farm Bureau. He was an active member for 52 years, participating in county and state boards and committees. Bill was also a local director for Dairy Farmers of America and a member of the Virginia Angus Association. He served as a board member of the Southern States Tazewell Cooperative and he was a member of the Rich Valley Fair and Tazewell County Fair Associations.
Family will receive friends at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home, Saltville, VA from 5-9 on Tuesday, January 24th. Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday at the Little Valley Christian Church in Tannersville, VA. Internment will be in the Keister Cemetery, Tannersville with a graveside service performed by the Rich Valley Masonic Lodge #172.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the following: Little Valley Christian Church; Tannersville Volunteer Fire Department or the Tazewell-Russell Shrine Club.
Members of the Law Enforcement Community will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
