William (Bill)'s Story
BLUEFIELD — William (Bill) Jack McCann, 83, of Bluefield, VA, died on Monday, February 20, 2017. Bill was born on January 16, 1934 in Cedar Bluff, VA and was the son of the late George Russell and Helen Pack McCann. He was a member of the Brush Fork Church of God. He was a graduate of Richlands High School, where he enjoyed football and baseball. He later attended Lynchburg and Bluefield College. Bill was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a combat medic for the U.S. Army. Bill retired from Norfolk & Southern Railroad after 31 years of service as an Industrial Engineer. Never one to be idle, he and his son then opened and ran Precision Golf in Bluefield, VA for an additional 26 years. Bill enjoyed golfing and talking to everyone, (it seemed as he knew everyone in the Bluefields), as well as taking up tickets for Graham High School Football games, which he did for 40 years. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Although Bill loved his family, his passion was for his wife of 59 years, Betty. Married as young sweethearts, they were fiercely devoted to each other. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Barry Jack McCann.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Betty; his daughter and son-in-law, Marcella and John Jones; his grandchildren, Jennifer and Courtney Jones; daughter-in-law, Kathy S. McCann; brother, Charles; sister, Mary Ruth Lowe and her husband, Marvin; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 24, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Dudley Memorial Chapel with Rev Samuel Chaffin officiating. Visitation will be held one hour immediately prior to the service. Entombment will follow at Grandview Memory Mausoleum, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Military Rites will be conducted by the VFW Post #9696 and the Pocahontas American Legion Post #14.
In lieu of flowers, the McCann family asks for donations to be made in Bill's name to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice.
