Virginia (Ginny)'s Story
INDIAN TRAIL, NC Virginia (Ginny) A. Mitchem-Smith, 81, of Indian Trail, NC and formerly of Bluefield, VA, went home to her reward on the Lord's Day, Sunday, July 16, 2017, following a short but courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Born November 25, 1935, in Pageton, WV, she was the daughter of the late Garfield Roosevelt and Bonanza (Lilly) Mitchem. She grew up in McDowell County and graduated from Northfork High School, class of 1953. She was a pastor's wife for 30 years in the Wesleyan Church, serving the churches and district in many different capacities.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Rev. Walker C. Smith, Jr; two sons: Ronald and Darryl; daughter: Sharon; daughter-in-law: Betty Jo; three sisters: Mildred, Anna and Goldie; four brothers: George, Albert, William and Clarence.
She is survived by daughters: Tammy (David) Haywood of Indian Trail, NC, Rhonda (Mike) Beatty of Bluefield, VA; son: Paul Smith of Bluefield, VA; like a daughter: Shelia (Mike) Wilson of Mint Hill, NC; daughter-in-law: Brenda Smith of Bluefield, VA; sisters: Wanda Reynolds, Hilda (Robert) Bailey and Norma Jackson; one brother: James Mitchem; sisters-in-law: Lucy Mitchem, Shirley Mitchem, Leora Mitchem, Peggy Cornwell and Betty Smith; brother-in-law: Jimmy Smith; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The service to celebrate her life will be held Friday, July 21, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Dudley Memorial Chapel with Rev. William Hunter, Rev. Jim Russ and Rev Perry Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Dudley Memorial from 6-8:00 P.M.
