Virgie Mae Isom, 91, of Concord, NC, formerly of Beckley, WV was born September 19, 1925 to Calvin and Mary Lizzie Askew in Litiware, WV. Virgie passed on Monday, May 15, 2017 at North Carolina Health Care System in Concord, NC, following a short illness.
She was a member of Kyle Chapel AME Zion Church in Gary, WV, and also attended Midway Shiloh Temple in Keystone where she served as a Pastor's aide, choir member, communion assistant and head cook. She will be remembered for her rolls, cabbage, and cream cheese pound cake. She loved to crochet and made over 30 bedspreads in various sizes for many friends. She served as a board member of the Tug River Clinic and the Council of Southern Mountain. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star for numerous years, and was a foster grandparent for 15 years. She loved to travel and help anyone. She was a fashion statement wherever, and at any age when she entered a room. Virgie loved her stylish clothes and hats.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L Isom; five brothers, Herman Askew, Junior Askew, John Askew, George Askew, Robert Askew; and two sisters, Blanche Green and Florence Brown.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Walden and husband Alton of Elmont, NY, and Jackie Lawson and husband Orlando of Concord, NC; three grandsons Alton Walden, Justin Thomas and Orlando Lawson Jr.; eight great- grandchildren, Ebony, Alessa, Ashley, Aaron, Dahasa, Nazir, Daor, and Jayln; special friend Phyliss Powell; special niece, Elizabeth Neal; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Homegoing services for Virgie will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2017 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral home in Princeton with Elder John Hale officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Park Cemetery in Princeton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour on Friday.
