Stephen's Story

SILVER SPRING, MD Stephen T. Byrd, 64, of Silver Spring, MD, formerly of Morgantown, died Saturday, May 13, 2017 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Born August 13, 1952 in Princeton, he was the son of Ted and Betty Shrewsbury Byrd of Princeton.
Steve was a graduate of Princeton High School and attended WV Institute of Technology, received a Bachelors of Science at Concord College and received a Masters of Science at West Virginia University. He dedicated himself to public education working in primary education as a teacher, counselor and substitute. He was a passionate musician and brought music into his classrooms as well as the lives of everyone around him. He was also a world traveler trekking across the US, Europe, and Peru.
Survivors include one son, Zachary Byrd and wife Katherine of Silver Spring, MD; one sister, Sue Yurkiewicz of Princeton; one niece, Nikki Yurkiewicz of Havre de Grace, MD; devoted friend and beloved caregiver, Betsy Eppes of Silver Spring, MD; his former wife, Barbara Byrd of Princeton; and two special aunts, Oden Godfrey and Muriel Allen both of Princeton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Honoring Steve's request, the body will be cremated following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org), WV Public Broadcasting (www.wvpublic.org), Music in the Schools (https://musicintheschools.org) or Friends of the Cheat (www.cheat.org).
The family will receive friends Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. until service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
