Sheila Anne Maitland, 76 of Bluefield, VA, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV. Born August 27, 1940 in Bradford, PA, she was the daughter of the late William and Martha O'Connor.
Sheila graduated from Bradford High School in 1958 and soon after married her high school sweetheart. He joined the Army in 1960 and their adventure together began. She was a proud Army wife who supported her soldier through 3 tours in Vietnam and family moves to Germany, Georgia, Alabama, Alaska and Virginia. Sheila never met a stranger and greeted everyone with her beautiful smile.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Maitland, Jr.
Survivors include her brother: Brian O'Connor of Rochester, NY; her sister: Cathy Hughes and her husband, Tom of Bradford, PA; her sons: Jay Maitland and his wife, Annette of Las Cruces, NM and Andrew Maitland and his wife, Velia of Bluefield, VA; 5 grandchildren: Josh and his wife, Amy, Jessica and her partner, Jerrin, Melanie and her fiance, Travis, Kayla and her partner, Taran and Janie; 7 great-grandchildren: Nathan, Aiden, Arianna, Abbigail, Alyssa, Kameryn and Jerrin (J2); several nieces and nephews and her cat Muffin.
The family would like to thank the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV for their care and compassion during the last days of her life and also the Princeton Community Hospital Cancer Center staff and radiologist, Joe Sult for making her feel like family.
Sheila will join her husband at the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC on June 2, 2017 at 11:00 A.M.
