GRUNDY, Va. — Samuel Wade Hylton, Jr., of Grundy, VA, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA, after a long illness. Born November 10, 1933, in Bluefield, VA, he was the son of Samuel Wade Hylton and Anna Lou Carter Hylton.
Sam graduated from the 1952 class of Graham High School where he was class president and played football and basketball on "Burrhead Bradley's" winning teams. He was a graduate of Concord College, and a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War conflict.
Sam began his 38-year career with Appalachian Power Company in the Bluefield, WV office. He later was Tazewell office manager and was transferred to Grundy in 1961 to help promote the new heat pump systems. He worked in the engineering department and finished his career as line inspector.
His love of work was evident in many ways. After moving to Grundy, he was bookkeeper for Claude Boyd. He also, with his good friends Terry Matney, owned A&M Trucking Company and later with Henry Farmer, Buchanan Electric Company.
He was a former member of the Grundy Lions Club where he served as secretary to the State of Virginia Lions Governor, Roger Powers. He also served on the Town of Grundy Water Commission.
Most importantly, he was a member of the Grundy Church of Christ, having given his life to Christ when he was nine years old at Graham Christian Church. At Grundy he served as Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56-years, Anna Lee Hylton; his daughter and son-in-law Angela Leigh and Tom Cooper of Grundy, VA; his son and daughter-in-law Steven Carter and Mary Beth Hylton of Abingdon, VA. He has three grandsons who were his pride and joy, Ethan Wade Cooper, Jack Wyeth Cooper and Carter Samuel Hylton. And special neighbors Craig Plymal and John Lark. Two sisters, Eva Lee Morgan of Kennesaw, GA and Betty Ann Graham of Princeton, WV. One nephew, Jimmy Graham and one niece, Beth Ann Galvin.
Funeral Services for Samuel Wade Hylton, Jr. will be conducted Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at the Grundy Church of Christ with Evg. Dennis Wimmer officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, VA.
Friends may call at the Grundy Church of Christ Monday evening at 6:00 P.M.
Active Pallbearers will be elders, deacons and men of the Church of Christ; Craig Plymal, John Lark, George Mitchell and the Watkins Street Brotherhood.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Appalachian Power Company Co-Workers.
