Roy's Story

SOUTHLAKE, Texas Roy Weyman Cook passed away April 21, 2017 at the Isle of Watermere in Southlake, TX. He was 95.
Born February 10, 1922, in Wyoming County, WV, Roy graduated from Pineville High School in 1941. After completing training in Dayton, OH, he was recruited to work for the Glenn L Martin Aviation Corp of Baltimore, MD. It was in the Washington, DC, area that he met his future wife, Barbara Sayers. Also from West Virginia, she was working for the Surgeon General's office at the Pentagon. They were married July 25, 1942 and would have celebrated their 75th anniversary this year.
During World War II, Roy served in the US Army with the 567 Anti-Aircraft Artillary Battalion as a tracker on their 40mm gun crew. Following the war, Roy and Barbara moved to Bluefield, WV, where they resided for 34 years. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Bluefield Country Club, and Elks Lodge #269. Roy began his career with the US Postal Service in 1947 and was promoted to Postmaster in 1969. In 1981 he was promoted to Sectional Center Manager in Charleston, WV, and then became Mountaineer District Manager. He retired from the postal system in 1984. That same year they moved to Roanoke, VA, where they lived for 12 years. In 1996, they moved to Wilmington, NC, and lived at The Cape where Roy enjoyed playing golf daily. They moved to Keller, TX, in 2002 to live with their daughter and family. Roy and Barbara were active members of the Keller Senior Center for many years.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents: Pearl [Cook] and Birchard Hays Cook; brothers: Arnet, Waldo, Warren, Kester, Estil, Bernard, and Lawrence; sisters: Ada Cook and Edna [Cook] Cooper. ? Survivors include wife, Barbara [Sayers] Cook, daughter Brenda [Cook] and husband H Duane Beckner of Keller, TX, grandson: Justin Beckner and wife Melissa [Fulgencio] of Anaheim, CA; sister Marie [Cook] Rakes of PA; sister in law Harriet [Sayers] and husband Bernard Beavers of Tazewell, VA., brother in law, Robert Sayers of Erlanger, KY, numerous nieces and nephews.?
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Monte Vista Park Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ed Fisher officiating.
The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
