Robert Earl's Story
Robert Earl "Bob" Shaffer, 87, of Bluestone Loop, Bluefield VA, died peacefully Monday, May 8, 2017 at his home with his loving family at his side.
Born January 12, 1930 in Princeton, he was the son of the late Herbert Earl Shaffer and Goldie Mae Williams Shaffer.
Bob was a graduate of Princeton High School, Class of 1948. Bob was a former machinist for Coppinger Machine Shop in Bluefield and retired as a machinist for the Norfolk Southern Railroad after 28 years of service. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance Way.
Bob's interest in travel & hunting took him to South Africa in 1986 on a 10 day hunting Safari with a cousin, Oakie Bishop. Each killed five trophy animals that are mounted and displayed in the home. They also visited Victoria Falls while in Africa. Another special trip was a driving trip to Alaska. In 1997 Bob & Gail left July 1st and returned home on July 31st. Toured Alaska & parts of the Yukon, spent each night in a different motel on the entire trip. Arrived at the Alaskan border on the 9th day. Bob always told people, we would have gotten there sooner but Gail wanted to stop at all the casinos along the way.
Bob was a good man, wonderful husband, loved his children, Doug, Cindy & Jessica, enjoyed family get-to-gathers, playing croquet & was a self taught golfer. He became a good golfer, and could on occasions throw the golf club pretty far. Never broke him of that habit. Gail wants to thank those that faithfully & physically helped with caregiving the past three plus years. Robin Bolton, Kendra Gibson, Pat Rife, Randy Ssynan, Dan Whitmer, David & Jessica Dorsey. And sincere thanks to all that have offered prayers, phone calls, cards, visits wherever we were, and the many expressions of interest & concern for Bob in personal conversations will always be remembered.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Eugene Shaffer, two siblings; Phyllis Jean Sandy & Darrell Eugene Shaffer.
Survivors include his wife Gail Elaine Davidson Shaffer of 47 ½ years, daughter, Cynthia Mae Shaffer Veneri, of Land O' Lakes, FL, a granddaughter, Jessica Elaine Shaffer Dorsey & husband David of Princeton: Sister-in-law, Billie Jean Shaffer of Bluefield; The mother of his children, Margaret Martin of Rich Creek, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
