Rev. Curtis's Story
BRISTOL, Va. — Rev. Curtis Alson Murray of Bristol, VA joined the Church Triumphant on Thursday, February 9, 2017 after a courageous 3-1/2 year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Curtis was born in Marion, VA on March 11, 1938. He graduated from King College in Bristol and received a Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. Curtis was ordained a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Presbyterian Church on June 19, 1966. He served churches in Strawberry Plains, TN, Bristol, VA (Walnut Grove), Bluefield, VA (Graham) and Farmville, VA (Cumberland). For a time he directed the work of Child Evangelism Fellowship in Washington County, VA.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Bessie Shew Murray; brother Lee F. Murray; sisters Carrol Smith and Nancy Field; daughter Deborah Lynn Murray.
Survivors include his loving wife of nearly 55 years, Joan Anderson Murray; daughter Cynthia (Mark) Smith of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren Samuel and Abigail Smith; sister Janice (Charles) Long of Rockledge, FL; sister-in-law Sally A. Burns of Kingsport, TN; niece Sheila (Steve) Miller of Marion, VA.
A memorial service celebrating Curtis' life and the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ will be held at Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church in Bristol, VA on Saturday, March 4 at 11 a.m. Visitation will follow. His body has been donated for medical research to "Restore Life USA."
