Nan's Story

PRINCETON — Nan Elizabeth Small, of Fairgrounds Road, Princeton, WV went peacefully from this earthly life on January 25, 2017 at the age of 93.
Born January 9, 1924 in Dana, WV to the late Maurice "Bill" and Emma 'Emmie" Bailey.
Nan was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 2009 by her husband of 67 years, Junior Earl Small; son James Edward Small in 2014; grandson, Ivan Earl Small; granddaughter, Angela Dawn Schneider; sister, Alice Sutphin and brother, Jim Bailey.
Nan lived in Mullens, WV for many years where she along with her husband, raised five children; organized Brownie and Girl Scouting.
Having five children she was very involved with the schools in Mullens; field trips, fund raisers, transporting groups to district and state club affairs; chaperoning dances and band trips; shuttling car loads of kids to health clinics in Pineville. Always on the move!
At the age of 45, she got her GED and enrolled in LPN classes at the Vocational School in Beckley, WV where she graduated in the top 5 of her class. She worked at Mullens General Hospital for a short time. She and Earl moved to Havaco, WV (near Welch, WV), where she went to work for the McDowell County Board of Education as a school nurse, retiring with 13 years service. Lived in Havaco for 28 years where she volunteered with the Red Cross blood drives; Red Cross disaster teams during flooding in Welch; worked with the Black Diamond Girl Scouts continuing her troop leadership role; taught First Aid classes and with her husband organized, got donated ambulances and equipment, acted as officer in the McDowell County Rescue Squad.
In 1991, they moved to Princeton, WV where they spent summers enjoying the WV Mountains and winters in warm-sunny Scottsmoore, FL.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Loleta Frye of Zephyrhills, FL; Eloiuse Holstein of Princeton, WV; Nancy Mounts of High Point, NC; Susan McKnew and husband Michael of Roanoke, VA;
Grandchildren: Mark Allen Schneider and wife Cathy of Loveland, OH; Todd Schneider of Chesapeake, OH; Chelsea Small of Roanoke, VA; Ann Hanna and husband Jon of Gaffney, SC; Corey Holstein of Princeton, WV; Ronnie Johnson of High Point, NC; Michael Johnson and wife Laurie of Pfafftown, NC; Deidre Blankenship and husband Hank of Roanoke, VA; Emily McKnew of Charlottesville, VA; Marisa and Julie McKnew of Roanoke, VA. Nan leaves 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren;
Her faithful doxy, "Katie" and "adopted son" and wonderful neighbor, Steve Arnold and wife Donna.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton with Pastor Steve Arnold officiating.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, January 29, 2017 from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton.
Those attending the graveside services are requested to meet at the funeral home no later than 12:30 P.M. on Monday.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Nan's honor to the Mercer County Animal Shelter, 961 Shelter Road, Princeton, WV 24740.
