Miriam Jean's Story
Miriam Jean Webster Porterfield, 92, died Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at Cypress Glen United Methodist Retirement Home in Greenville, NC.
Services were held at Cypress Glen on Saturday, September 2, 2017. Mim, as she was known, was born April 15, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio to Cyril H. Webster and Edith Ross Webster. Mim was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to everyone she met. She was married in 1947 to her high school sweetheart, Charles William Porterfield, who preceded her in death in 2008.
She was a graduate of Ohio State University, where she was a member of Alpha Phi, Mortar Board and Phi Beta Kappa. She worked in the Dean's Office at OSU counseling freshman students until her marriage. Mim and Chuck were the proud parents of six children, who all survive. She was a full time mother and homemaker, chauffeur, tutor and encourager to her children. She enjoyed playing bridge and cards games, and enjoyed water exercise. She was a leader in the United Methodist Women, and taught Sunday School and Bible study for many years. She served in many capacities in churches in Pocahontas, VA, Indianapolis, IN, and Kinston and Greenville, NC, during her lifetime. She was an avid volunteer with the church as librarian, and also with Meals on Wheels, the American Red Cross Bookmobile, and Brightwood Community Center in Indianapolis.
Mim is survived by her daughter Helen Goranflo (Morgan), son Paul Porterfield (Sandy), daughter MaryJo Glover (Roger), son David Porterfield (Kathy), daughter Amy Myers (John), and son John Porterfield (former wife, Penny); thirteen grandchildren, Hank Goranflo (Christy), Eric, Chris (CJ) and Emily Porterfield, Isaac Glover, Sarah Whitehead (Jared), Lauren Glover, Tahra Porterfield, Charlie (Jessica), Billy and Tommy Myers, and Grace and Cole Porterfield; seven great-grandchildren; her brother, Norton Webster and wife, Nancy; brother in law Hank Porterfield, plus several nieces and nephews.
