PRINCETON Melvin Ray Martin, 90, of Old Gardner Road, Princeton, died Thursday, June 8, 2017 at his home with his family by his side.
Born March 10, 1927 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Mark Edward and Josie Mae Via Martin.
Melvin retired as a Crane Operator for the Virginian/N&W Railroad having worked in the Princeton and Mullens Shops. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Bethel United Methodist Church. Melvin served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II.
A loving husband, father, son and brother, he enjoyed wood working and building.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Allen Viars Martin, a grandson, Gregory Scott Purdy, four siblings: Virginia Rowland, Helen White, M. E. White & Junior White.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted children: Diane Martin & Melvin Ray Martin, Jr. both of Princeton; Granddaughter, Loren Ross & husband Brandon of Spanishburg; Great-grandson, Drake; Great-granddaughter, Cadence; A host of nieces and nephews. Siblings: Mildred Pritchard of Portsmouth VA, Simon & Hilda Martin of England, Fred & Barbara Martin of Cody WY.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Melvin Ray Martin will be conducted on Monday, June 12, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Dennis Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 P.M. until the service hour at the funeral home.
