HARRISONBURG, Va. — Lora Mae Shrewsbury Oxley, a former resident of Princeton, Beckley area and Mullins, born on April 13, 1922, died on March 12, 2017, at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She was born in Egeria, West Virginia to John Green and Lillie Effie Wood Shrewsbury.
Lora is survived by her son, Don (Pat), granddaughter, Susan Oxley Simmons (Brian) and two great-granddaughters. She is also survived by her brother, Charles "Bill" Shrewsbury (Dorothy) and numerous nieces and nephews. A special thanks to her nieces, Joyce Thompson Liskey, Windria Liskey Wenger and Winona Liskey Scott, all of the Harrisonburg area, who were especially kind and thoughtful and visited their Aunt Lora regularly.
Preceding Lora in death are her parents, her husband, Harold Oxley (1986), her brothers, John (1993), Edward (1992), Nathan (1998), Atha (1991); her sisters, Lessie (2006), Lenna "Brookie" (2004), Lula (1998), Locy (1990) and Lausie (1983).
Lora was born in Egeria and was one of the first students to attend Long-Wanted School. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson H. S. in Beckley, WV in 1939. She married Harold Oxley, son of Estle and Dee Martin Oxley on May 23, 1942 before he left to serve in WW II. She was a bookkeeper during her working life.
The Oxley's retired to Princeton in 1971 and a few years after Harold's death in 1986 she moved to Florida and then to Texas before settling at Sunnyside Retirement Community in 2002.
A Memorial service will be held at Sunnyside Meredith Chapel, on Sunday, March 19th, at 2:00 PM. A graveside service will be held at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, on Princeton-Bluefield Road in Princeton on Thursday, March 16, at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Fellowship Fund at Sunnyside Retirement Community, 3935 Sunnyside Drive, Suite A, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
