Johnny's Story

Johnny Lee Asbury, Sr., of Pounding Mill, VA, won his final battle on Monday, June 12, 2017 at the age of 68 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN. He was born on May 22, 1949 in Bluefield, VA to the late Charlie Frank Asbury and Dorothy June Bowling of Tazewell, VA.
John faithfully attended Raven Assembly of God in Raven, VA. He was a 1968 graduate of Tazewell High School. He retired after 20+ years as a federal mining inspector for MSHA in the Vansant Field Office. He was a member of the American Federation of Government Employees and the Tazewell chapter of the American Legion. He served his country in Vietnam as an E-4 Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Marine Corps and received the following Medals of Honor: Combat Action Ribbon, Rifle Marksman, Vietnam Campaign Medal and two Purple Hearts.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Dan and Alice Bowling of Tazewell, VA; his paternal grandparents: Joe and Vicie Asbury of Tazewell, VA; father-in-law, Henry Lee White, Sr., mother-in-law, Mary Ann Boyd White both of Doran, VA and nephew Michael Hamm of North Tazewell, VA.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years whom he adored, Cynthia Diane White Asbury; son: Johnny Lee Asbury, Jr. of Richlands, VA; daughter: Deborah Michelle Hale of Bluefield, WV; step-son: Eddie Lee Quick and wife Lora of Bristol, TN; step-daughters: Crystal Johnson and husband Rev. Doug of Raven, VA and Ketina Lowe and husband Philip of Pounding Mill, VA. 10 Grandchildren: Caitlyn and husband Jeremy Lee of Tazewell, VA; Emma Asbury of Honaker, VA; Brittany Quick and Zachary Horn of the home; Dane Quick and wife Chelsea of Bluefield, VA; Lauren Johnson Daniel and husband Ben of Ashland, KY; Corey Johnson of Columbus, OH; Kaylen Quick of Tazewell, VA; Branson and Parker Lowe of Pounding Mill, VA. 6 Great-grandchildren: his princessesRaya and Ryla Quick; Maddie, Abby, Evan and Elijah.
He is also survived by 4 brothers: Charlie Asbury and wife Peggy; Dan Asbury; Mike Asbury and wife Lynn; Frank Asbury, Jr. and wife Wanda all of Tazewell, VA. 3 sisters: Mary Atkins and husband Sam of North Tazewell; Daisy Larimer of Tazewell; Cathy Hamm and husband Mike of North Tazewell; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Radiology, Dr. Desalvo of R.C.M.C. Oncology and the staff of Johnson City Medical Center on wings 4200 & 4300.
Funeral services for Johnny Lee Asbury, Sr. will be conducted at 12:00 pm on Friday, June 16, 2017 at Raven Assembly of God in Raven, VA with Rev. Doug Johnson and Rev. Danny Altizer officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA. Members of the Casey-Short VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites. Pallbearers include: Philip Lowe, Dane Quick, Zachary Horn, Corey Johnson, Branson Lowe, Parker Lowe and Ben Daniel. Honorary pallbearers will be: brothers, brothers-in-law and special friends.
The family receive friends from 6 - 9 pm on Thursday evening at Raven Assembly of God in Raven, VA.
