Eugene "Jerry" Poole, 81, of DeLand, Florida settled in the arms of Jesus on May 6 2017. Born in Goodwill, West Virginia in 1935, Jerry was the fourth of six children. At the age of 18, he married the love of his life, Norma Jean Woodward. Together, they raised six children in Bluefield, WV.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Norma. Other survivors include sons Michael (Cindy), Matthew (Lisa), Jeffrey (Donna), and Mitchell; and one brother, Randall (Carol).
Affectionately called "Papaw," he is also survived by 13 grandchildren and their spouses, as well as 14 great-grand children. He is preceded in death by his parents, Corbett & Fannie, daughter Meri Beth, son Mark, and granddaughter Ashlyn.
Papaw was a fast runner. Local kids and athletes would say, "Mr. Poole is the fastest runner in Bluefield." He was often challenged to defend that reputation and never had a defeat.
In 1997 he exited the Norfolk & Southern office for the last time. Retirement for Jerry meant building his dream home and moving to Deland with his sweetheart. Life was filled with "yard-sales," mowing the grass, and keeping up with his ever-expanding family.
Jerry often returned to the home-place of his grandparents in Sparta, NC where he was deeply loved. An outdoor service will be held Saturday, May 20 (3:00) at "The Hurley House" with a meal following. The meal will be catered by "The Pines" Restaurant and there is no cost.
