NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. — James Nathan Hankins, age 74, of North Tazewell, Virginia passed away on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, West Virginia.
He was born on August 10, 1942 in Richlands, Virginia to the late Nathan Elmer and Dora Sparks Hankins. He was a retired coal miner and most recently was employed as a transit driver for Four County Transit. He was a bus driver for Tazewell County at age 16 and worked at UMWA mines in Gary, WV, Pineville, WV, and Bessemer, Alabama. He worked at TCCC and Wolf Creek Country Club; Clinch Valley Community Action; Experience Works; and the YMCA in Tazewell, Virginia. He was a member of UMWA Local #2133 Mc Calla, AL.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister: Mary Elizabeth Hankins; brother: Thomas Estel Hankins; and two brothers-in-law: Reese Russell Jones and Tommy Shelton.
Survivors are: His Loving Wife of 52 Years: Judy Elaine Mitchell Hankins; Daughter: Kimberly Michelle Hankins of Tazewell, VA; Son: Darren Dwayne Hankins and wife, Doralinda of Grapevine, Texas; Sisters:
Helen Smith and husband, Gerald of Dallas, Texas, Betty Jones of Tazewell, VA, Linda Shelton of Tazewell, VA; Sisters-in-Law: Carol Hankins of North Tazewell, VA, Lila Quesenberry and husband, John of Dandridge, TN; Brothers-in-Law: DeWard Mitchell, Jr. and wife, LaVerne of Grantville, PA, Gary Mitchell and wife, Helen of Tazewell, VA, Toney Mitchell and wife, Raquel of Cleveland, TN; Special Niece whom he loved like a daughter: Daphne Boutin and husband, John; Special great nephew and niece whom he loved like grandchildren: Nathan Boutin and Reese McCall.
Funeral services for James Hankins will be conducted Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 7pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Mike Walker officiating. Interment will follow Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 12pm at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 11:30am Wednesday morning. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.
