SPANISHBURG James Edward Bryant, 87, of Spanishburg, WV died Sept. 22, 2017, in the hospice ?care unit of the Beckley Veteran's Hospital with family keeping vigil. ?Born in Corinne, WV on October 13, 1929, James was the son of the late William ?and Myrtle Brown and the grandson of the late Rush and Julia Brown who raised him as one of their own.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Sue Lilly Bryant, daughter Julia ?Ann and husband State Senator Michael Woelfel of Huntington, WV, and son ?James Edward Jr and wife Tina Odle Bryant of Spanishburg, WV; grandsons ?Matthew James Woelfel and wife Stacie of Huntington, Michael Jacob Woelfel of ?Huntington, WV and Trevor James Bryant of Huntington, WV; Granddaughter ?Bethany Noel Bryant of Morgantown, WV; Great grandsons Colin Woelfel and ?Carter Woelfel of Huntington, WV and Great granddaughter Madelyn Woelfel of ?Ona, WV. Also surviving are his sisters Irene Nestor and Ruth Stinson both of ?Princeton, WV and many nieces and nephews.
James was a 1949 graduate of Spanishburg High School, an Air Force Veteran of ?the Korean War, and a retired Conductor for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad ?after 36 years of service.
He was a member of the Spanishburg United Methodist Church. Where he served the church as trustee and treasurer. James was supportive of the Bluestone Valley Volunteer Fire Department contributing to many of its projects. He was a charter member of the Spanishburg Ruritan Club and served as president and committee chairperson of the Pancake Breakfast and Adopt a Highway programs. James also supported the Bluestone Valley Fair at Spanishburg and the Mercer County Fair at Spanishburg and PikeView Schools.
James was an avid sports fan of Marshall and WVU basketball and football teams ?and of local middle and high school teams. In addition, he was president of the ?first PikeView Sports Boosters.
He was a member of the Thornwood Hunting Lodge in Thornwood, WV. Hunting ?with his friends and their dogs was among one of James favorite activities. He had many stories that he shared about their adventures. He loved gardening and took a lot of pride in his lawn.
Services to celebrate the life of James will be conducted at 2 P.M. on Monday September 25, 2017 at the Spanishburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Gerald Kincaid Officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 P.M. until the service hour.
Pall bearers are Freddie Conner, Tim Farley, Richard Godfrey, Bill Hatcher, Robert ?Lambert, Gary Lilly, Robert Lusk, and John Allen Scott, Jr. with J.W. Bowling as an ?Honorary Pallbearer. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of ?flowers, it is the family's wishes that donations be made to The Bluestone Valley ?Volunteer Fire Department-P.O. Box 71, Spanishburg, WV 25922 and/or The ?Spanishburg United Methodist Church-P.O. Box 98, Spanishburg, WV 25922.
