Henry's Story

PRINCETON, WV Henry Dixon Jones, Jr. 92, died Thursday August 3, 2017 at Glenwood Park Retirement Village in Princeton.
Born July 11, 1925 in Northfork, WV, he was a son of the late Henry Dixon Jones, Sr. and Mary Jones. Mr. Jones attended Northside School, Ramsey Junior High School, and graduated from Beaver High School. Mr. Jones was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he loved to sing in the Church choir.
As a young man, Mr. Jones spent the summer months working at Frank's Bakery, Feuchtenberger Bakery, Bluefield Music Company, and later began attending McLaine's Business College.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and had served in World War II and the Korean War. When he enlisted, he spent his first year in the Mojave Desert with the Marine Air Force as a base personnel. He was then transferred to the advanced training for fliers in Oahu, Hawaii where he worked as base personnel. After World War II concluded, he stayed in the inactive reserves. When the Korean Conflict began, he was reactivated for 14 months where he was stationed in Camp Lejeune.
Mr. Jones was a member of American Legion Riley Vest Post 9 where he was Post Commander for nine years and had also served as Deputy State Commander. During his time with the American Legion, he began participating in programs at Chicory Square as a patriotic program on Memorial Day. He was also a member of the Bluefield Virginia V.F.W. Post 9696.
Mr. Jones was also an avid musician. He enjoyed singing and had been a member of a quartet in Bluefield. He was an outdoors enthusiast and had a hunting cabin in Pocahontas Cabin. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife before she passed away.
After leaving the Marine Corps, Mr. Jones became a bookkeeper and went to work as a clerk for Appalachian Power in Switchback. He was transferred to Bluefield to fill the position of Garage Clerk. He then worked on the line crew as a Clerk. He had also worked as the Red Cross First Aid Chairman where he taught First Aid classes for the power company, fire departments, and the Civil Air Patrol.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Evelyn Jones.
Survivors include his brother, Deaton Jones and wife Brenda of Tazewell, VA; cousin, Larry Chandler and wife Tina of Church Hill, MD; three nephews who were like sons, Henry Jones and wife Kim of Bluefield, WV, John Deaton Jones of Greensboro, NC, and Douglas Jones and wife Tiffany of Bluefield, WV; and great nieces and nephews, Daniel Jones and wife Linda of Morgantown, WV, Mary Jones, Turner Jones and Maggie Jones, all of Bluefield, WV, and Nicole McCarly and husband Tyler of Inwood, WV.?
The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Sunday August 6, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted on Monday August 7, 2017 from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Wanda Childs officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV where nephews will serve as pallbearers.
