PRINCETON - Hazel Saunders, 97, of Glendale Avenue, Princeton, West Virginia went to be with her Lord on Monday, March 6, 2017 following a long illness. Born April 10, 1919 in Tidewater, West Virginia she was the daughter of the late Albert Earl Testerman and Frances Matilda Toler Testerman.
Hazel was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Hazel and her family moved to Princeton when she was five years of age where she grew up learning from her mother how to be a great homemaker. She loved to cook, sewing, crocheting, quilting and making many beautiful items for her family to enjoy. She was an avid reader of her Bible, Christian novels and working crosswords. She was a member of Woodmen of the World Princeton Camp in which she enjoyed her friends and all activities until she was unable to attend. She worked as a clerk and alterations person at Leggett, Santons, Barbakows and Nelsons. She had also worked at G. C. Murphy and Princeton City Cleaners. Hazel worked with her husband to minister at many churches including Church of The Nazarene in Athens and Princeton, Silver Springs and many other community churches in the area.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Roy L. Saunders; two sisters, Virginia Mae Pritchett and Flora Lee Harvey; three brothers, Edward Earl Testerman, Oakey Lee Testerman and infant Freddie Testerman.
Survivors include two daughters, Matilda Whitlow and husband Wayne and Sonja White and one son, Roy L. "Butch" Saunders, Jr. and wife Jeannie all of Princeton and three granddaughters, Cyndi Whitlow, Lisa Sexton and Marsha Crawford and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren all of whom she loved dearly.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel with Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 8 at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
