Fred H. McFarland, Sr. 92 of the Gratton community in Tazewell, VA died Sunday, May 14, 2017 at Dogwood Crossing in Tazewell, VA. Born April 14, 1925, he was a son of the late Roy and Hazel Etter McFarland. He was a member of the Concord United Methodist Church.
Mr. McFarland was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, serving on the Destroyer USS Hickox in eleven major engagements and was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Alaskan command. He was also a member of Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell, VA. Fred owned and operated Main Street Barber Shop for over 60 years and retired in 2016 at age 91.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Yost McFarland; his son, Fred H. McFarland, Jr.; sisters, Edith Young and Mary Safewright
He is survived by his grandson, Chad McFarland of North Tazewell, VA; two great granddaughters, McKenzie Sharitz and McKayla McFarland; sister in law, Betty Taylor of Tazewell, VA.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 AM Wednesday, May 17, 2107 at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery at Gratton in Tazewell, VA with the Reverend Jim Scott officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by members of Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell, VA and VA National Guard Honor Team of Gate City, VA.
