RICHLANDS, Va. — Fred "Chicken" Fletcher, Jr., age 78 of Richlands, Virginia passed away on Friday, February 17, 2017 at the Commonwealth Assisted living in Cedar Bluff following a lengthy illness. He was born in Buchanan County on September 20, 1938 and was the son of the late Henry and Rosie Sparks Hunt, former Buchanan County natives.
He was a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1957 and was a retired coal miner from the Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation. He was a loving father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather. Fred loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a proud member of the UMWA Local #7327 of Jewell Valley and a veteran of the U.S. Army Vietnam era. He had lived all of his life in the Jewell Ridge and Richlands area and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen Honaker Fletcher and son, Barry Fletcher and his brother, Tommy Hunt.
Those who live to carry on his spirit are: Daughter, Kim Burks of Richlands, VA; Daughter in law, Kathy Fletcher Keene and husband, Richard of Claypool Hill, VA; Sister in law, Kathy Craig and husband Bill of Roanoke, VA; Nephew, Mike Baldwin; Special pets, Peanut and Monkey; Grandchildren, Maegan Brown and husband, Timmy and Joey Fletcher. Great Grandchildren, Kellsie Brown, Charlie Brown and Andie Brown.

Funeral services for Fred "Chicken" Fletcher, Jr. will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Timmy Brown and Rev. Doug Allen officiating. Interment will follow at the Hunt Family Cemetery on Bearwallow near Jewell Ridge, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Perry Woosley, Harold Young, Jim Young, Rex Cole, Richard Cole, Ronnie Nelson, Eddie Cole, Tony Cole and Allen Whited. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640.
The family will begin to receive friends on Monday afternoon beginning at 12:00 noon until time of the service at 2:00.
