Dorothy Sanders Mahaffey, 92, of the Abbs Valley Community of Bluefield, VA, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV. She was born in Boissevain, VA to the late Walter Frazier Sanders and Bessie Ruble Sanders. Dot lived most of her life in Abbs Valley where she was a devoted homemaker and an avid gardner. She was a member of the Boissevain Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Wain C. Mahaffey of 65 years, son-in-law Larry J. Hypes, brothers, John, Walter, Roy, Harry and Ernest Sanders; two sisters Nan Asbury and Sally Sublett.
Surviving are a daughter, Brenda L. (Mahaffey) Hypes of Martinsville, VA, a grandaughter, Shelly L. Hypes (Rob) of Charlotte, NC, and a grandson Joshua T. Hypes (Jill) of Statesville, NC. Also surviving is her loving sister, Irene Graham of Abbs Valley and a host of nieces and nephews. Mary Akers was her special caregiver for the last three years.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Rodriguez Funeral Home in Pocahontas, VA. Rev. Reginald Blakewood will officiate. Friends may call Tuesday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in Sanders Cemetery in Boissevain, VA.
Pallbearers are Norman Murphy, Jerry Sluss, Mary Akers, Steven Boone, Herbert Asbury, Kenny Willis, and Kevin Pauley. Honorary pallbearers are Bo Willis, David Asbury, Michael Boone, Tommy Hodock, David Musick, Clifton Miller, Jimmy Dickens, and Joe Murphy.
