Cathy's Story

Cathy Jean Helton Speeks (54) closed her beautiful eyes on earth for the final time on July 15, 2017 at EAMC in Opelika, Al. She was born January 8, 1963 to Reba Fern (Gibson) and Larry O Helton in Bluefield, WV. Cathy was a mother, grandmother, wife and friend. She graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1981. She briefly attended SVCC and graduated with honors from Horry Georgetown Technical College in 1995, fulfilling her lifelong goal of becoming a registered nurse. Cathy worked in the nursing field until her health cut short her dream. Cathy was preceded in death by her mother Reba Fern Gibson, and grandparents Effie Collins and Daniel Frank Collins.
Cathy is survived by her husband of 35 years, Danny of Auburn, AL; daughters Maggie Holder (Shawn) of Decatur, AL, and Keri Beth Speeks and granddaughter Alyssa Marie Speeks (who was the apple of her eye) of Auburn, AL; Step-father Joseph Gibson of Pocahontas; father Larry O Helton of Diamondhead, MS; brothers Michael Helton (Brenda) of Athens, Larry Christopher Helton (Thitaree)of Bluewell, sister Jennifer Lovell of Pocahontas, and uncle Charles Collins (Vaun) of Pocahontas and many cousins.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 19 from 6 to 8 PM at the Fincastle Presbyterian Church in Bluefield, VA. A celebration of Cathy's life will be held on Thursday, July 20 at 2 PM at the Fincastle Presbyterian Church officiated by The Reverend Gerald Manning. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Cathy's memory to The American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association

Per Cathy's wishes she was cremated by Alabama Funeral Home in Dadeville who served Cathy's family.
