Barbara's Story

Keller, TX- Barbara Sayers Cook passed away at the Isle of Watermere in Southlake, Texas, just forty-five days after losing her beloved husband Roy. Barbara was born in Bluefield, WV on August 7, 1922 and graduated from Beaver High School in 1941. After completing her training at West Virginia Business College, she was recruited to work at the Pentagon for the Surgeon Generals Office. It was in the Washington, DC area that she met her future husband Roy Weyman Cook. Also from West Virginia, he was employed with the Glenn L Martin Aviation Corp of Baltimore, MD. They married in Maryland on the 25th of July 1942 and would have celebrated their 75th anniversary this year. Barbara and Roy moved to Bluefield following the war, and lived there for 34 years. Barbara worked for Bluefield Telephone Company for a few years, and then as a bookkeeper at Leatherwood Dairy for 18 years. While in Bluefield, they were active members of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Bluefield Country Club. In 1981, they moved to Charleston, WV and then to Roanoke, VA in 1984, where they lived for 12 years. In 1996, they moved to Wilmington, NC, and lived at The Cape where they enjoyed playing golf. They moved to Keller, TX, in 2002 to live with their daughter and family. Roy and Barbara were active members of the Keller Senior Center for many years. ?Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Roy, her parents: David Robert and Vada Harriet [Peery] Sayers, her sisters: Ethel [Sayers] Breed and husband Dick, Margaret Sayers, Nancy [Sayers] Workman and husband Robert. Survivors include daughter Brenda [Cook] and husband H Duane Beckner of Keller, TX, grandson: Justin Beckner and wife Melissa [Fulgencio] of Anaheim, CA, sister: Harriet [Sayers] and husband Bernard Beavers of Tazewell, VA., and brother: Robert Sayers of Erlanger, KY, numerous nieces and nephews.? A graveside service will be held on Thursday June 8, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Monte Vista Park Cemetery with Pastor Mike Beavers officiating.
