PORTLAND, Ore. — Arthur G. Neal, 87, of Portland, Oregon passed peacefully on December 9, 2016.
Born on November 22, 1929 on a farm in Rock, he earned his Ph.D. in Sociology and Anthropology in 1959 after seeing Army combat in the Korean War.
Art taught Sociology at Bowling Green State University in Ohio for 35 years until retiring in 1995. He published more than 40 papers in academic journals plus numerous research monographs and more than ten books. With a specific interest in social psychology, his academic career was capped by being named a Distinguished University Professor. He achieved particular gratification by advising and mentoring numerous graduate students and maintained long-term relationships with many of them. After retirement and moving to Portland, Art continued his academic interests by mentoring junior faculty at PSU and authoring nine books.
Art Neal had two children, Kevin Neal (deceased 2012) and Lisa Neal from his marriage to his first wife Sara Jo Thornberry, who passed away in 1985. In 1987, Art Neal married Helen Youngelson and became a stepfather to Chris Waehrer and Keith Waehrer. He had five grandchildren.
In retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively. He particularly enjoyed his trips to West Virginia to visit his large extended family who knew him as "Uncle Bud." He was loved and respected in all realms of his life and valued what he could learn from everyone he met.
Memorial services are being planned at a later date.
